A visit from Darwin High School…

It was great having the Darwin High School Year 12 dance students at the Ludwig Studio yesterday. In a three hour workshop we took them through the ways in which we train each day with Yoga and exercises adapted from the new Ludwig class followed by an intensive session on various methods we employ for movement and choreography creation.
At the end of the workshop three groups presented their own short choreography using all the elements we worked with. Most impressive!!!

A Sydney Sejour

It’s 14 degrees in Sydney. Today I was supposed to be in Noumea … but it is erroneous to think you could get a visa from the French consulate in a day, so instead my flights are being rearranged and I am profiting from the Sydney climate with many pairs of socks, jumpers and a good thriller.
I have, however, also profited from Sydney culture. I was fortunate to see the Sydney Dance Company’s second to last performance of New Creations 2. What a treat! It was also the second to last performance by Amy Hollingsworth who is retiring from the stage. She performed a duet by Bonachela with violinist Ruth Palmer called Irony of Fate, a work which won the third prize in the 19th International Competition of Choreographers in Hanover in 2005. I thought she was sublime. The second work by Bonachela I also enjoyed. Soledad is a very latin style duet, also an award winner at the 2006 Biennale Danza e Italia international competition for independent choreographers. The matinee was performed by Lachlan Bell and Annabel Knight. I thought they danced it beautifully and romantically and intensely. It is the sort of duet that is very open to interpretation by the dancers. It would be interesting to see how different casts wear the style and choreography. The third work in the program, Satisfying Musical Moments, was by Emanuel Gat. Wow. Quite extraordinary. An amazing feat of structure and composition. Stunningly performed by the whole company. Brilliantly costumed. Hats off, I say.
The night before I was a little underwhelmed by Gaff Aff, a gimmick and slapstick driven piece of theatre. Although it was full of imaginative devices and ideas they could not adequately sustain the hour for me. And the sound was too loud.
And now I wait with baited breath to find out if my visa is granted and I am flying to Noumea this week!
Signing off in Sydney.

Le Chat Noir

Yellow Energy…

I never was a child who had to be told to eat her fruit and veg…always loved them. Mostly I loved apples and pears – cores and all. In latter years, however, my allegiance has shifted towards the satiating, energising and easily digestible banana… Stay tuned for more on this golden fruit!

A little strip tease…

Well, what a raunchy start to the week for Ludwig!!

Later this month Perth audiences will be blown away by the smash hit production ’The Graduate’ .  This version is being directed by Peter Lawrence. Starring the vibrant and still so sexy Jerry Hall as Mrs Robinson I promise this show is a must see for all who can….. and I know this as a fact because earlier this week I went into the rehearsal room to help out with the choreography of the strip scene and boy was it fun! By the end of the morning I was so jealous of the actress getting to do the scene! I was really into it (maybe too much) and was wondering if the story would still work with a male stripper instead? Although I did get close to asking if they needed a second cast I thought maybe the audience members wouldn’t be as into my stripper moves as I was?

Anyway, while there I got to see the full scene played out a number of times and each and every time I was totally captivated by the wonderful cast and their performances, especially considering that they still have several weeks until opening night! It was particularly interesting to see the process of staging a scene and how the actors and director went about building it up to make sure that, not only was each and every line spoken with the correct intention, but also that it had a rhythm to it, like music, that ensures the audience member’s attention is kept for the duration!

Well, I’ll say it again, anyone who wants a great night out in Perth go get a ticket or click on the link below to book one online because I promise you won’t be disappointed !!! The season runs from the 26th of August at His Majesty’s Theatre Perth.

WIRED and dance in the digital age

Ludwig are big fans of the magazine WIRED (UK edition). Such big fans that a yearly subscription was not a luxury but a budget essential.

The latest May issue has many interesting articles for those invested in the future of dance in the digital age. “Dance Goes Transmedia” is a look at the group The LXD who are finding new and brilliant ways of engaging and interacting with their audience via the internet. “How Cheryl Cole Went Virtual” looks at putting 3D virtual performers on stage with live artists. Under “The Creative Crowd’s Greatest Hits” you can read about the most innovative ways to get your arts project funded through crowd/fan-based online funding.

We at Ludwig gobble up this magazine cover to cover. A must! www.wired.co.uk
